The XOXO Cup Cozy

If you’ve been following along with all the recent stitch tutorials I’ve been releasing, then you won’t be surprised to see the latest patterns I’ve got for you that use them! First up, today I’m sharing the pattern for my XOXO Cup Cozy…just in time for Valentine’s Day making!

These cozies use the same stitch pattern I used for my XOXO Throw that came out last year. If you don’t know the story behind this stitch pattern, I kind of happened upon it on accident, having made the intended stitch wrong for the entire blanket before I realized it. But I loved the texture so much, I decided to run with it. My oldest son helped with naming it, commenting that it looked like Xs and Os, and since I couldn’t find a name for the stitch pattern, I decided to call it The Kiss Stitch.

The biggest difference in going from the blanket to a cup cozy was figuring out how to work it in the round. While I very well could have just made a small rectangle and sewn up the sides to make a tube, I didn’t want an unsightly seam mucking up the small surface area of the cozy.

These beauties all work up so amazingly quick, and they are a great stash buster project! Slip a gift card to their favorite coffee shop inside one and it is the perfect gift for your favorite Galentines!

This pattern is pretty easy and straight-forward, and I think anyone skilled in the basic stitches of crochet can make it. All it takes is The Foundation Single Crochet, chains, single crochet, and The Kiss Stitch in the Round! Approximately 22 yds / 20 m of Color Made Easy by Lion Brand, or a comparable CYC 5 Bulky yarn
Crochet hook in size J / 6 mm
Tapestry needle
Scissors

Chain (ch)
Chain Space (ch sp)
Skip (sk)
Foundation Single Crochet (FSC)
Single Crochet (sc)
Double Crochet (dc)
Kiss Stitch (KS)

Finished Measurements

Approximately 9.5 in / 24 cm in circumference
Approximately 3.5 in / 9 cm tall

Gauge

1 in / 2.5 cm square = 3 sc or 1 kiss stitches x 2 pattern rounds

Notes

This pattern is written in US Standard terms.
This pattern can be altered for size or tension by using any beginning multiple of 3 foundation single crochet stitches (or if using a starting chain, a multiple of 3 chains).
Chain-1s at beginning of single crochet rounds do not count as a stitch.
Chain-4s at beginning of kiss stitch rounds DO count as a double crochet + chain 1.
Since this is a fixed diameter, the stitch count per row will not vary. You will maintain the same number of stitches throughout the pattern (as written, 27 sc and 9 KS).

Pattern

R1: 27 FSC. (Alternatively, if you would prefer to work a foundation chain instead, chain 27, and taking care not to twist the chain, slip stitch to the first chain you made, chain one, and single crochet into each stitch around, slip stitch to top of first single crochet of the round to close) (27 FSC)

NOTE: Leave a long tail so that you can use the tail to sew the bottoms of your first and last FSC stitches together when you finish. This will close the small gap created when you joined these stitches to begin working in the round.
NOTE: The length of these 27 sts is equal to the circumference of your cozy, which if following gauge should be around 9.5â€ / 24 cm.

R2 (Kiss Stitch Round): Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch1), WORKING BACKWARD TO THE RIGHT skip 1, dc next, working in front of the ch-4.

NOTE: See Kiss Stitch tutorial in Special Stitches section for step by step photos.

WORKING FORWARD TO THE LEFT skip 2 sts (do not count the st at the base of your ch-4), dc next, ch1, dc into the first skipped stitch, leaving the second skipped stitch unworked. Repeat from * all the way around, join with a sl st to the 3^rd chain from the beginning of the round. (9 KS)

R3 (Single Crochet Round): Ch 1, sc into first st (the 3^rd chain you joined to in the previous round), *sc into ch sp, sc next 2 sts. Repeat from * 7 more times, sc into next ch sp, sc into next stitch, join with sl st to first sc of the round. (27 sc)

R4-7 : Repeat alternating R2 and R3. (maintain 9 KS and 27 sc respectively)

Tie off, weave in ends!
