The XOXO Cold Cup Cozy

Hello again!

Yesterday I shared the hot bevy version of the XOXO Cup Cozy, and today, I’m sharing the pattern for my XOXO Cold Cup Cozy because cold drinks need cozies too!

These cozies use the same stitch pattern I used for my XOXO Throw that came out last year. If you don’t know the story behind this stitch pattern, I kind of happened upon it on accident, having made the intended stitch wrong for the entire blanket before I realized it. But I loved the texture so much, I decided to run with it. My oldest son helped with naming it, commenting that it looked like Xs and Os, and since I couldn’t find a name for the stitch pattern, I decided to call it The Kiss Stitch.

The biggest difference between the XOXO Cup Cozy I shared yesterday and the XOXO Cold Cup Cozy I’m sharing today is that this version has a base! Because of the need to work a flat circle, I’m classifying this as advanced beginner, since some knowledge of increasing in rounds is necessary.

I use a cotton blend yarn for my cold cup cozies, since if the drink starts to condensate, the cotton will more readily absorb that moisture. I have to say that I’m kind of in love with Bernat Maker Home Dec yarn. The bulky weight works up quickly, and the stitch definition with it is off the charts!

If you need a last minute Valentine’s Day gift, these beauties work up so amazingly quick, and they are a great stash buster project! Slip a gift card to their favorite coffee or smoothie shop inside one and it is the perfect gift for all your favorite Galentines!

Don’t let the flat circle spook you! I’ve got your back with step-by-step photos and instructions. And if the magic circle has ever confused you, try my non-traditional method here. Aside from that, all you need to know how to do is chains, single crochet, and The Kiss Stitch in the Round! I’ve linked my step-by-step photo and video tutorials for these special stitches for you, just in case they’re not familiar to you.

  • This pattern can be altered for size or tension by using any beginning multiple of 3 foundation single crochet stitches (or if using a starting chain, a multiple of 3 chains).
  • Chain-1s at beginning of single crochet rounds do not count as a stitch.
  • Chain-4s at beginning of kiss stitch rounds DO count as a double crochet + chain 1.
  • Since this is a fixed diameter, the stitch count per row will not vary. You will maintain the same number of stitches throughout the pattern (as written, 27 sc and 9 KS).

Pattern

PART 1: BASE

Start with a magic circle.

R1: sc 6 into magic circle (6 sc)

R2: ch1, sc inc in each st around, join with sl st to first sc of the round. (12 sc)

NOTE: sc inc means that TWO single crochets are worked into the same stitch, See photo below.

The first two stitches in the second round of flat circle single crochet have been worked in a taupe colored cotton yarn laying on a white background. Two lines connected in an angled 'V' point to each of the stitches just worked and labeled with text on the photo reads: "two single crochets in the same stitch."

R3: ch1, *sc inc, sc 1, repeat from * around, join with a sl st to the first sc of the round. (18 sc)

R4: ch1, *sc inc, sc 2, repeat from * around, join with a sl st to the first sc of the round. (24 sc)

R5: ch1, *sc inc, sc 3, repeat from * around, join with a sl st to the first sc of the round. (30 sc)

Do not tie off.

PART 2: BODY

R6 (Single Crochet Round): ch1, sc in each st around, join with a sl st to the first sc of the round. (30 sc)

Six rounds of single crochet have been worked, the first 5 in a flat circle, in a taupe colored cotton yarn laying on a white background. Text on the photo reads: "Round 6."

R7 (Kiss Stitch Round): Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch1), WORKING BACKWARD TO THE RIGHT skip 1, dc next (working in front of the ch-4).

Six rounds of single crochet have been worked in a taupe-colored cotton yarn in a flat circle with the beginning of Round 7 started by working 4 chain stitches. Text at the top of the photo reads: "Ch 4 (counts as a dc + ch 1), WORKING BACKWARD TO THE RIGHT, sk 1, dc next." The first of two arrows points to the stitch immediately to the right of the chain-4 and is labeled "skip," while the second arrow points to the stitch immediately to the right of the skipped stitch and is labeled "dc here."

WORKING FORWARD TO THE LEFT *skip 2 sts (do not count the st at the base of your ch-4), dc next, ch1, dc into the first skipped stitch, leaving the second skipped stitch unworked.  Repeat from * all the way around, join with a sl st to the 3rd chain from the beginning of the round. (10 KS)

R8 (Single Crochet Round): Ch 1, sc into first st (the 3rd chain you joined to in the previous round), *sc into ch sp, sc next 2 sts.  Repeat from * 8 more times, sc into next ch sp, sc into next stitch, join with sl st to first sc of the round. (30 sc)

R9-14: Repeat alternating R7 and R8. (maintain 10 KS and 30 sc respectively)

Tie off, weave in ends!

A taupe-colored XOXO Cold Cup Cozy lays completed on a white background with an empty smoothie cup with a red straw inside it.
