Back Post Double Crochet Stitch Tutorial
Hello!
I’m here with another stitch tutorial today, the Back Post Double Crochet, or BPdc!
Post stitches are used to create a variety of patterns and textures in crochet, like cables, ribbing or more decorative raised patterns. They are worked around the post of the stitch from the previous row, as opposed to the normal method of working through the top ‘V’ of the stitch.
There are both front and back post stitches for all the basics: single crochet, double crochet, etc. But today, I will be showing you the Back Post Double Crochet (BPdc).
Psst! If you want to see the Front Post Double Crochet or FPdc tutorial, click here!
What’s this “Back Post” thing about?
“Back” post indicates from which side of the fabric you should insert your hook around the post, which in this case means inserting it from back to front. For the BPdc, you will work a double crochet by inserting your hook from the back of your fabric, around the front of the post of the indicated stitch from the previous row, then out the back of your fabric. This will push the stitch backward, or to the back of your fabric.
Following the photo tutorial is a video tutorial, just in case you need to see it in action.

If you want to see this stitch in action, I’ve recorded a video tutorial for you as well!
Now that you have mastered the Back Post Double Crochet, you are ready to start having fun with texture! Working a top down hat? Use alternating FPdc and BPdc to create ribbing for your brim! Want to make a textured pillow? Try the Basket Weave Stitch, which uses double crochet, front post double crochet and back post double crochet to make a lovely texture that you’ll want to keep rubbing your hand over. Feeling really adventurous? Start playing with cabling! The possibilities are endless! And now that you know how to back post double crochet, you can apply the same technique to other basic stitches, like half double, or treble crochet for even more texture fun!
And, just in case you were wondering (and skimmed over it at the top 😉 ), yes! I DO have a tutorial for the Front Post Double Crochet as well! Check it out here!
Until next time!
