Granny Stripe Stitch Pattern

Hi friends!

If you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen the cocoon style cardigan I made using the granny stripe stitch pattern. I thought I would be a fun tutorial for you, so here we are. Grab your yarn and hook and let’s get started!

Granny squares can be intimidating if you haven’t attempted them before, so working the granny stripe is a great stepping stone to familiarize yourself with the basic method before moving on to the square. Or, if you’re like me and want the look of the granny square but don’t want to work in the round, the granny stripe is a great alternative.

This is a great stitch pattern for a beginner because it’s really just double crochet stitches and a two-row repeat. It’s the perfect thing to work on while watching your latest binge on Netflix since you don’t even need to look much at your work when you are able to feel and work into the spaces so easily. It’s even more fun when you make it with multiple colors! If you’re unsure how to change colors in crochet, be sure to check out my tutorial for that here.

This tutorial uses the following stitches and abbreviations:

  • Chain (ch)
  • Skip (sk)
  • Double Crochet (dc)
  • ** – indicates instructions that are repeated sequentially

On to the Tutorial!

When you work the granny stripe, you’ll need to begin with a multiple of 3+4 stitches in your foundation row. Be sure if you’re starting with a chain that you also add the requisite number of turning chains for your preferred stitch. For example, I’m working my granny stripe on a foundation of single crochet in my sample here. I chained 15+4+1 = 20 and worked my single crochets as normal. Alternatively, you could work 19 foundation single crochets and skip working into chains.

Rules of Thumb
1. Foundation stitches must equal a multiple of 3 + 4
2. Turning ch-2 and ch-3 always count as double crochets
3. Row 1 and its repeats always begin and end with 2 dc
4. Row 2 and its repeats always begin and end with a dc
