Synopsis
After nearly eighteen months at Basgiath War College, Violet Sorrengail knows there’s no more time for lessons. No more time for uncertainty. Because the battle has truly begun, and with enemies closing in from outside their walls and within their ranks, it’s impossible to know who to trust.
Now Violet must journey beyond the failing Aretian wards to seek allies from unfamiliar lands to stand with Navarre. The trip will test every bit of her wit, luck, and strength, but she will do anything to save what she loves—her dragons, her family, her home, and him.
Even if it means keeping a secret so big, it could destroy everything. They need an army. They need power. They need magic. And they need the one thing only Violet can find—the truth. But a storm is coming…and not everyone can survive its wrath.

I have a major book hangover after finishing this book yesterday morning. Gah, it was so good! I was worried since Iron Flame wasn’t as good as Fourth Wing (in my opinion, obviously), but I think Onyx Storm is better than both previous books!
So, what were my initial thoughts? Whoa. Just….whoa.
This one was much better than Iron Flame. The action had purpose, there was much less miscommunication happening (though still some), and the spice was back on level with Fourth Wing – all issues I had with Iron Flame. There’s more places, more themes, more politics, throw in a little religion…so many moving parts keeping this story going. So many swoon-worthy lines from Xaden too. Sigh.
We got a LOT of information in this book. Many questions were answered but we were left with many more. And Yarros didn’t just not pull her punches, she delivered KOs, so be prepared for your heart to drop from your chest a few times. And that ending!
I love the way the story is developing. I have a few theories and I can’t wait to see how it continues to play out. Now the dreaded wait for the next book.
Until next time,
