Synopsis

An ICU nurse accidentally uncovers a patient’s frightening past in thischilling thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of Local Woman Missing andJust the Nicest Couple.

Meghan Michaels is trying to find balance between being a single mom to a teenage daughter and working as a full time nurse. While on duty at the hospital one day, a patient named Caitlin arrives in a coma with a traumatic brain injury, having jumped from a bridge and plunging over twenty feet to the train tracks below.

But when a witness comes forward with shocking details about the fall, it calls everything they know into question. Was Caitlin pushed and if so, by whom and why?

Meghan has always tried to stay emotionally detached from her patients, but this time, she mistakenly lets herself get too close until she’s deeply entangled in Caitlin’s and her family’s lives. Only when it’s too late, does she realize that she and her daughter could be the next victims.

This is my pick for my 2025 Book Challenge for July: Beach Read. For more recommended reads, see my blog post here.

This book was all over the place. There was a lot going on, and when I say “a lot,” I mean take what you think is “a lot” and double it. I think the high number of plot threads in this one were meant to act as red herrings, to keep the reader guessing, and guess we did, but those threads felt a lot like the loose ends I am too lazy to weave into my crochet project when I’m done with it. They are just left hanging there, going nowhere and detracting from the what would otherwise be something nice to look at.

The twist wasn’t really a twist. The reveals felt at odds with the characters or were otherwise unbelievable. And I’m left wondering what point the author was trying to make with the book. Was this about abusive relationships? Fraught mother/daughter relationships? Divorce? Serial sexual predators?

From an entertainment perspective, it held my attention. I wanted to see how it ended and I finished it quickly, but if I’m being honest, I listened to it half-heartedly and felt like I missed nothing. There was a lot of filler information that wasn’t really adding to the story. And while I was hoping for the author to weave all those threads together to make it make sense in the end, it was kind of frustrating that they weren’t. On one hand, I really like when there are unreliable narrators and dubious endings like Alice Feeney masterfully wrote in Sometimes I Lie. But here, it just fell short of the mark. Not my favorite Mary Kubica book. It was entertaining but left me disappointed.

Until next time,
