Synopsis
From UK bestselling author Gillian McAllister comes an astonishing, compulsively twisty psychological thriller about a mother who witnesses her teenage son stab a man and then seizes on an unconventional way to try to save him, deemed “clever, original, and so addictive it should come with a warning” by Alice Feeney, bestselling author of Rock Paper Scissors
Can you stop a murder after it’s already happened?
Late October. After midnight. You’re waiting up for your seventeen-year-old son. He’s past curfew. As you watch from the window, he emerges, and you realize he isn’t alone: he’s walking toward a man, and he’s armed.
You can’t believe it when you see him do it: your funny, happy teenage son, he kills a stranger, right there on the street outside your house. You don’t know who. You don’t know why. You only know your son is now in custody, his future shattered.
That night you fall asleep in despair. All is lost. Until you wake and it is yesterday. And then you wake again and it is the day before yesterday.
Every morning you wake up a day earlier, another day before the murder. With another chance to stop it. Somewhere in the past lies an answer. The trigger for this crime—and you don’t have a choice but to find it…

Oh that was goooood. I’m sad I held off reading this for so long! I love a good time travel element and this one didn’t disappoint. I loved how the author combined a fast-paced thriller with sci-fi elements. It reminded me a bit of Dark Matter by Blake Crouch with how well-developed the science-fiction element of time travel was written and the plot development was on par with something written by Alice Feeney. This was my first book by this author but will not be my last.
The story was so intricately woven and the moving backwards through time aspect definitely kept me on my toes. It asks the question, how well can you know a person after knowing them decades or even their whole life. I predicted a couple things but not the majority of them, which is a nice change of pace. There were a lot of details to keep track of and I found myself going back over certain parts, so this one will make you work for it, but it’s worth the effort.
I went back and forth between physical and audio versions of this book and I found the narration to be just okay. At times there was a shuffling noise in the background and no effort to modulate the voices of other characters except for Andy’s and that sounded kind of weird. Still, I spent the majority of this book with the audio version, so it wasn’t too bad.
Until next time,
