Synopsis
Learn an innovative crochet technique for creating beautiful, reversible fabrics with this comprehensive stitch guide by crochet expert and author, Ana-Maria Babanica.
This practical guide introduces you to the world of interlocking crochet, a method that uses just two familiar stitches (double crochet and chain stitch) to create intricate colorwork with surprising ease. Often considered simpler than mosaic crochet, interlocking crochet offers endless creative possibilities through its clever construction.
By interlocking two layers of mesh as you work, you’ll produce fabrics that are reversible by design: some featuring matching motifs on both sides, others revealing a completely different pattern when flipped over.
Inside, you’ll find 50 stitch patterns to explore and adapt in your own projects, each presented with clear step-by-step instructions and detailed photography. Whether you’re building confidence with colorwork or already comfortable exploring complex textures, this book provides all the guidance you need to master the technique.
To put your skills into practice, you’ll also discover five fully reversible garment and accessory projects, designed to showcase the beauty and versatility of interlocking crochet.

I said it in my review of her first book, Reversible Crochet Sweaters, and I’ll say it again: Ana-Maria’s talent and creativity absolutely blow me away. Considering how incredible that book was, it’s no surprise I couldn’t wait to get my mitts on her latest release, Interlocking Crochet.
Ana-Maria has truly found her sweet spot with reversible designs, and this book shows off that skill beautifully. She introduces 50 different interlocking crochet stitch patterns (also known as interwoven, intermeshing, or double filet crochet) and follows them up with ideas for what to do with all those swatches as well as 5 new patterns.
I’m not going to lie—I am a complete newbie at interlocking crochet. While her last book made the technique feel approachable, I was still intimidated by the idea of making anything beyond a swatch. Enter Interlocking Crochet. It takes that pressure off by focusing on manageable swatches to teach the technique. Just like in her previous book, Ana-Maria walks you through every step, misstep, and pivot point, helping you learn the rules before showing you how to break them.
While you may be tempted to dive straight into the fun patterns, I highly recommend taking the time to read the “How to Use This Book” section, especially if you’re new to the technique. She introduces the terminology, explains the setup rows used throughout the patterns, and gives useful background information on how the patterns work. I also found it helpful to use annotation tabs to mark sections like “Terminology” and “Basic Principles.” As a beginner, I flipped back to “Basic Principles” constantly.
And don’t skip the practice square. Seriously. Ana-Maria breaks down every step of every row so clearly that you always know exactly what to do next. Once you’ve worked through the practice square, the training wheels can come off—but she’s still right there beside you with detailed instructions and plenty of row-by-row photos in the later squares.

Although Ana-Maria uses CYC 1 super fine yarn for the swatches, I opted for a larger yarn as a beginner so I could better see and understand the stitches and placement while working the practice square (“Tic Tac Toe”). I used Bernat Maker CYC 5 with an 8 mm main hook and 7 mm alternate hook, as described in the introductory sections. The result was a reversible swatch that doubled as a hot pad and absolutely wowed my family with my double-sided prowess.
With the practice square under my belt, I let my youngest son pick his favorite (The Arrowhead) and whipped it up in CYC 4 I Love This Cotton. The size isn’t especially practical for anything, but it was a great way to practice while using up scrap yarn.
My boys and I spent plenty of time oo-ing and ah-ing over the amazing stitch patterns, and even as a designer, I can barely wrap my head around the creativity and skill it takes to come up with designs like these. But beyond the incredible patterns themselves, I also loved the thoughtful little details woven throughout the book. The geometric flourishes inspired by the stitch designs are such a fun touch, and each stitch pattern includes a graphic representation that mimics the swatch itself. You can see what I mean in the “How to Use This Book” section and in the Rainbows stitch pattern.

This is such a fun technique, and I’m so grateful Ana-Maria has de-mystified it and made it feel approachable. If you’re curious about interlocking crochet, this is a fantastic place to start—from the queen of reversible crochet herself.
