World Cup Road Trip
Hi there, friends!
In HBW Land, we love road trips…well, I do at least. Maybe don’t ask my kids. Or HBW Hubby who insists on always being the driver. But for me, the snacks, the open road, the snacks, the uninterrupted crochet or reading time, and did I mention the snacks? What’s not to love!?
We just took our second road trip in as many weeks and while I still owe you a blog post about the first one, I couldn’t wait to share this one first.
This past Christmas, HBW Hubby surprised me with tickets to see the Netherlands play Tunisia in one of the World Cup group matches. Attending a World Cup game has been on my bucket list for a long time, so to say I totally freaked out in excitement is an understatement. I didn’t care who we were seeing, I was just happy to be there.
World Cup: NED vs TUN
We got up early Thursday morning, headed out west to Kansas City, where the match was set to take place at Arrowhead Stadium, wearing our matching shirts. The boys were less than enthusiastic about the matching shirts, but I couldn’t resist. We were nervous about the game getting delayed due to all the predicted thunderstorms, but while we did get rained on a little bit, we seriously lucked out. Good thing we had our ponchos though!

The energy in the stadium was electric and catching. The whole place was covered in orange and red (but mostly orange for The Netherlands). We stood for the national anthems of first Tunisia then the Netherlands, counted down to the first kick, and cheered on all the amazing goals, saves, and footwork. We even got to see Katia Itzel García debut as only the third woman as center referee in a men’s World Cup game in history—so cool!
Of course, I made a short video about our trip to the World Cup to share with you! While I wasn’t fast enough to catch any of the goals on camera, I think I captured the energy and our experience pretty well. I didn’t include anything from the second day of our trip, though, so read on for that!
Worlds of Fun
Before heading home, we decided to use those Gold passes from Six Flags we bought our youngest as part of his birthday gift last year and go to Worlds of Fun on the Missouri side. It is definitely a smaller park but charming and it was kitted out for the World Cup too. The park is divided into themed sections based on parts of the world and the decor, music, and rides all play into that.

In Americana, we started off our first ride of the day with Patriot, which is similar to Batman at Six Flags St. Louis, if maybe smoother with less Gs. We also rode their hybrid coaster, the Zambezi Zinger, which features a cool (but loud due to its enclosure) spiral lift hill. I’d compare it to American Thunder in St. Louis, but with more padding in the cars, which I appreciated. We also rode Prowler, which I’d compare to Mystic Timbers of King Island.
Unfortunately, the ride we were most excited for, Mamba, shut down right as we were set to be the next ones through…isn’t that always the way? Sadly, it did not reopen before we needed to hit the road. It wasn’t busy at all, at least not at opening time on a day that looked like rain. We were able to ride almost everything we wanted and be done within 2 hours.
It was a quick trip, but one I know I’ll remember and hopefully my kids too.
Stay tuned for a post about our trip to Kings Island and Cedar Point in Ohio that we went on the week before this trip. It’s been a busy June, friends. I can’t wait to share more!
Stay safe!
xx
