Roller Coaster Road Trip – Ohio Edition
Hi there, friends!
Our youngest is obsessed with roller coasters, so we’ve been making the rounds within driving distance to different amusement parks using a Six Flags Gold Pass we bought for his birthday gift last fall. So far this year, we went to Six Flags Over Georgia during Spring Break and of course we’ve made multiple trips to Six Flags St. Louis since it’s in our backyard here. But two weeks ago, we went to Kings Island and Cedar Point.
This wasn’t our first time at either park. We went to Cedar Park two summers ago and Kings Island last summer. As obsessed as he is, our youngest only started riding some of the more serious coasters last year, so we knew we had to go back to Cedar Point so he could ride what he missed out on last time. On our previous trips to both parks, some rides we’d really wanted to ride had been closed, so this was our moment, and we made the most of it!
I put together a few of the highlights from our trip and you can see a few of the coasters that were new to us. But if you want details, read on!
Kings Island – Mason, Ohio
As you may recall from some of my previous posts, my mom lives in Indianapolis, so it was the perfect home base for this road trip, plus the kids always love a trip to Grandma and Grandpa’s. Kings Island isn’t far from Indy, so we got up early that Monday morning and got to Kings Island just before it opened. It was great because the first thing we did was make our way to Diamondback, which had been closed when we visited last summer. We were able to walk onto it and ride it a couple times in a row before moving on to other favorites. It was a lot of fun! Lots of Gs and that water spray is epic. You can see it in the video. We also hit up Mystic Timbers, The Beast, Orion, and Invertigo. Bonus—we finally got to ride Orion when it wasn’t raining! Let me tell you going that fast in the rain is NOT a fun time. Luckily it was sunny skies for us this time.

Cedar Point – Sandusky, Ohio
After we were done at Kings Island, we hopped back in the car. Our original plan had been to head back to Indy, visit with family a couple days, then head north to Cedar Point, but weather was showing rain at the end of the week, so we opted instead to drive straight to Sandusky after Kings Island. We were able to get in, check into our hotel, grab a bite to eat, then head to the park for some evening rides.
There’s a brand new ride called Siren’s Curse that takes the train out onto a tilt lever, inverts you 90 degrees to connect with the rest of the track and lets you go. It was so smooth and quiet. HBW Hubby and I couldn’t get over how quiet it was. It was fun! After that, we made our way to Millennium Force. My youngest didn’t ride that one when we were there two years ago, so this was pretty high on his list and he loved it. The following day, we finally managed to ride Top Thrill 2, which was closed the last time we visited and had intimated me with its 120 mph speed and inversion twist. Honestly, we were going too fast to feel any of the Gs, but that speed sure did whip the hair elastic right out of my hair! I had to go the rest of the morning repeatedly braiding and re-braiding my hair. Yikes! The boys insisted on repeat rides of Magnum XL, which HBW Hubby and I bowed out of after one ride. We’d been shaken, rattled, and rolled enough by that point, thank you!
After everything, I’m happy to report that Steel Vengeance still takes the title for my favorite coaster. It’s just so good! But if you want a good laugh…we rode it as a night ride that first night in the park (we spent 2 days there). We didn’t put it together when we witnessed the hordes of mayflies present earlier, but we sure did after that ride. The bugs, friends, the bugs! That ride probably should have come with a toothpick, haha, ewwww.
Needless to say, 3 days in a row of roller coasters was a lot. We happily headed back to Indy after and plopped our butts on the couch to watch some World Cup. Next up on our roller coaster tour is Chicago’s Great America. We’ve never taken the kids to Chicago before, so we’re hoping to make a few days out of it. Stay tuned!
Keep living the good life, friends!
xx
